Max Verstappen gave up his Red Bull ride for the first practice on Friday but didn’t suffer for it, posting the best time of the day at the Yas Marina Circuit during FP2 in the twilight. Preparation for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix continues Saturday with a final practice run on the 3.451-mile setup on Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates. Verstappen has long since clinched his second consecutive Formula 1 world championship and is the two-time defending winner in Abu Dhabi. His 1:25.146 lap in FP2 was 0.341 seconds ahead of Mercedes’ George Russell, who picked up his first career F1 victory last week in São Paulo.

FP1 saw some young drivers get a turn behind the wheel. F2 race winner Liam Lawson filled in for Verstappen and F2 season runner-up Robert Shwartzman got a shot in Carlos Sainz’s ride for Ferrari. IndyCar standout Pato O’Ward made his F1 race weekend debut in the cockpit of Lando Norris’ McLaren.

Charles Leclerc finished 0.453 seconds behind Verstappen in FP2. The Ferrari driver enters the weekend tied for second place in the driver standings with Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez, who was fifth in the second session.

Yas Marina Circuit has 16 turns after a renovation for the 2021 race, with three turns replaced by a single, less severe hairpin at tour four while turns 11-14 are now a sweeping banked curve. Turns 18-20 were widened to allow drivers to carry more speed through them.
