Justin Verlander pitched one game in 2020 and 2021. He won the Cy Young Award in 2019 and, remarkably, he could win it all again this year. Verlander kept up his dominant season last night against the Cleveland Guardians when he went six dazzling innings ,shutting out opposing batters on his way to his major league-leading 15th win. The Houston Astros won game one of this series 6-0. The only club better than the Astros in the AL is the Yankees. They made some key moves at the deadline to close that gap.

Houston strengthened their bullpen by adding Will Smith from Atlanta. They got veteran catcher Christian Vazquez from Boston and longtime Baltimore 1B/OF Mancini. None of these are blockbuster moves but it adds great depth for this club that could very easily make it back to the World Series for the fourth time in six seasons.

The Guardians will look to get back in this series tonight by starting Hunter Gaddis. He will make his major league debut tonight after stings in AA and being promoted to AAA in July. There are few breaks in this Houston rotation as Framber Valdez will get the start. The lefty is 9-4 with a 2.80 ERA. The Guardians are only one game out of a Wild Card spot so they’ll have plenty of motivation to defy the odds in this one.
