The defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche start a three-game home stand on Tuesday as they welcome Alexander Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals to Ball Arena. Colorado has won five straight games and has found a defensive groove that had been absent for the first half of the season. The team has held four of its last five opponents to one goal or less. Washington split the first two games of this road trip, winning 4-0 at Arizona on Thursday, before losing 6-2 at Vegas on Saturday. The Capitals have owned this series of late, winning six of the last eight games against Colorado, including three straight wins in Denver.

Ovechkin missed Saturday’s loss at Vegas with a lower body injury and will be a game-time decision for tonight’s game. Ovechkin is tied for sixth in the NHL with 30 goals and is 22nd in points with 52.

Colorado winger Mikko Rantanen is in the top 10 in the NHL for goals and points, including seven points during the teams current five-game winning streak.

The matchup of the night will feature the Caps seventh ranked penalty kill (81.6 percent) against Colorado’s ninth ranked power play (24.5 percent). Washington has not allowed a power play goal in four consecutive games.

The Avalanche won the first meeting of the season against Washington in November, as Nathan MacKinnon tallied a goal and an assist in the 4-0 win.
