No. 8 Duke (5-1) held off a scare from Oregon State in Thursday’s quarterfinals of the Phil Knight Legacy in Portland and on Friday, the Blue Devils will face Xavier (4-1) in the semifinals of the tournament. The quarterfinals were held at Veterans Memorial Coliseum, with the semifinals to be played at Moda Center. The Musketeers advanced with a quarterfinal victory over Florida. Kyle Filipowski leads Duke in scoring and rebounding, getting 16.2 points and 11.0 rebounds a game. Jack Nunge gets 17.0 points per game for Xavier and Zach Freemantle is averaging 15.5 points and 5.0 assists. Both coaches are in their first seasons at their respective programs, Jon Scheyer at Duke and Sean Miller, back for a second stint at Xavier.

The Blue Devils took the lead over Oregon State on a bucket by Jeremy Roach with 7:32 remaining and hung on down the stretch for a 54-51 win despite shooting just 26.7% for the game. Filipowski had 19 points and 14 rebounds and Ryan Young added 11 points and 15 boards. 

The Musketeers took a four-point lead into halftime against Florida, which led by four early in the second half. Xavier went ahead on a three-pointer by Colby Jones with 12:41 left and won 90-83. Jones and Souley Boum scored 22 points each for the Musketeers while Freemantle had 14 points and 11 boards.

Duke is 4-0 all-time against Xavier, with the last meeting between the teams at a neutral site in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Dec. 20, 2008. Miller was in his first time around coaching the Musketeers, who lost the last meeting 82-64 as Scheyer scored 23 points while still a player for the Blue Devils.
