Michigan State (5-5) has won its last two games and can become bowl eligible on Saturday when it hosts Indiana (3-7) at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. The Hoosiers have lost seven straight and can’t finish better than 5-7. The winner will earn The Old Brass Spittoon, a trophy the teams have played for since 1950. The Spartans claimed the prize last year with a 20-15 win at Bloomington. Tom Allen is in his seventh year as coach at Indiana and is 29-39, with the program’s last bowl bid in 2020. Mel Tucker is in his third season with the Spartans, who are 18-12 in that span and won the Peach Bowl last year to conclude an 11-2 season.

Michigan State beat Rutgers last week at home, 27-21. The Spartans took the lead late in the first half on Jalen Berger’s two-yard touchdown run and never trailed in the second half. 

Linebacker Cal Haladay was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week after recording 19 tackles while Payton Thorne was 19-of-35 passing for 256 yards and two scores. Berger had 85 yards on 16 carries.

The Hoosiers were on the wrong end of a 56-14 thumping at No. 2 Ohio State last week. Dexter Williams II was six-of-19 through the air for 107 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to Connor Bazelak late in the game. Williams also ran for 46 yards to lead the team. Indiana was outgained 662-269 in the game.

The Spartans lead the all-time series 49-17-1 with the road team winning the last two games.
