No. 3 Kansas (5-0) won Wednesday in coach Bill Self’s return to the bench from a four-game suspension and advanced to the semifinals at the Battle 4 Atlantic at Paradise Island in the Bahamas. The Jayhawks will take on Wisconsin (4-0) on Thursday with a berth in the tournament championship game at stake. Self is in his 20th season at Kansas and is 557-124 with a pair of national championships, including last spring. Greg Gard took over as head coach of the Badgers in December 2015 and has been to three straight NCAA tourneys. Gard’s record in that span is 148-78.

The Jayhawks led most of the way in their quarterfinal matchup with NC State, which got as close as three with 3:28 remaining. A pair of free throws by Jalen Wilson gave Kansas an eight-point lead with 2:31 left and it held on for an 80-74 win. Gradey Dick scored 25 points, Wilson added 19 and Kevin McCullar had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Wisconsin held Dayton to just 14 first-half points and 23.7% shooting in the game and picked up a 43-42 win in its quarterfinal. The Badgers didn’t score in the final 3:17, going up 43-39 when Steven Crowl split a pair of free throws but Max Klesmit blocked a shot with three seconds left to seal the win. Connor Essegian scored 13 points off the bench for Wisconsin.
The Jayhawks and Badgers haven’t played in more than 50 years, with Kansas holding a 3-1 edge all-time. The last meeting was at Kansas on Dec. 8, 1969, with the Jayhawks picking up a 76-60 win.
