Memphis (2-1) and Seton Hall (3-1) come in off wins when they meet in the quarterfinals of the ESPN Events International at State Farm Arena in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, on Thursday. The Tigers are in their fifth season under former star Penny Hardaway and are 87-44. Memphis reached the NCAA tournament last season, snapping an eight-year drought. The Pirates also have a former player at the helm, hiring Shaheen Holloway last spring after he took 15th-seeded Saint Peter’s to the Elite Eight. Seton Hall also played in the 2022 NCAA tourney, losing in the first round before coach Kevin Willard left to take the job at Maryland.

The Tigers bounced back from their first loss by beating visiting VCU on Sunday, 62-47. Memphis held the Rams to 29.1% shooting in the game and led by as much as 22 in the win. Jamir Watkins had 14 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the Tigers.

The Pirates also played on Sunday, bouncing back from a loss to Iowa by pummeling visiting Wagner 82-44. Al-Amir Dawes paced Seton Hall with 19 points and added three steals, Tray Jackson came off the bench for 16 points and Tyrese Samuel had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Memphis has beaten Seton Hall both times they’ve met previously, most recently an 84-70 win on Nov. 21, 2008, in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan.
