The Black Diamond Trophy will be up for grabs on Thursday night when West Virginia (1-2, 0-1 Big 12) visits Virginia Tech (2-1, 1-0 ACC) in Blacksburg. Just over four hours apart in the Appalachian Mountains, these two schools have been playing each other in football since 1912. West Virginia narrowly owns the upper hand in the series, with 29 wins in 53 meetings. That included a 27-21 win last year in Morgantown — a game that snapped a three-year Virginia Tech winning streak. That game was the first time the two teams had played since 2017, and just the second meeting since 2005 when Virginia Tech left the former Big East conference and therefore rendering the matchup a non-conference game.
