Instantly Increase Conversion Rate Using These Type of Optin Forms

Creating a simple and compelling style of optin form is fairly simple.

Most tools like Hellobar, HubSpot & Other lead generation tools make it a lot easier to create a CRM lead flow that works but performs average unless you customize them.

Being a WordPress user, you can even use some of the best opt-in form plugins available to quickly collect leads. But do they convert like crazy? Do they have that attractive call-to-action that can make people signup for your email list at first look?

A month ago, I primarily used three different formats of optin forms on my blog, which included:

  1. On click Popups
  2. Landing Page
  3. and hook-after-post optin form (also known as the sidebar or embedded form)

My lead generation conversion rate of above three different types in a week:

  1. On-Click PopUp converts at the rate of 0.35%
  2. The landing page Converts at the rate of 8.33%
  3. Hook (Inline embedded optin forms after the post ends) has a conversion rate of 0.02%.

Overall, I got 1168 views on these optin forms when combined, out of which the landing page had the lowest number. Still, the conversion rate was the highest. Still, the emails I’ve collected are way too low, so I thought I needed to change my strategy.

Selection Of Tools

Remember when I published my ultimate affiliate marketing strategies e-book? On May 28, I wanted to use it as my new lead magnet (ethical bribe), So I thought it the best time to test different formats and tools that can help me get more emails and leads a little bit faster than my previous record.

After a couple hours of research, I decided to use one of the three lead generation tools that specialized in CRM (Customer relationship management), which were:

  • HubSpot
  • Hellobar
  • and Privy

Now there’s another problem of choice here. HubSpot and Hellobar (more on Hellobar’s hidden treasure later), and since I’ve used both of them, I decided to go with the privy.

However, I had never heard of this tool before, and the internet is not much flooded with its review as well. There’s an impressive sales call on their landing page that says it’s free, so I thought, why not give it a try.

Update: I recently started to use Thrive Leads. So far, the conversion rate has been great. Here’s a screenshot of the same:

What Formats Did I Chose (and so should you)

After a month of use, I am sharing my statics and conversion reports in this post. Through my own experiments, I will also show how I am almost converting my visitors into subscribers daily with an average of 1.3%. All this was made possible with a series of tests and confidence and belief in trying something new.

Before creating my first campaign with Privy, I firstly deleted my old optin forms and uninstalled the OptinCat lead generator plugin.

When I created my first campaign, privy has 7 different formats, and surprisingly, Inline forms were not there. Since I told you they performed worst, I used two different formats: Slides and PopUp, as my first campaign.

Slides are the flyover forms that come out of any corner area of your screens, like the top left corner or the bottom right corner of your monitor. They leave more than enough space for your users to read your blog posts and other content and are not annoying at all.

On the other hand, popups are considered annoying and bad for the user experience because they (most of the time) hide the content and become kind of rigid.

However, I did something different to guarantee no visitor of mine can point it to be annoying.

I set the trigger of my popup to be Exit-Intent, which turned out to be the best thing I could do to grow my mailing list without disturbing my audience.

Luckily, the exit-intent popup showed some impressive optin conversion rates. Below is a screenshot of my campaign:

This exit intent campaign is a result of using OptinMonster.

The exit intent-powered popup converted more visitors even with lesser views than slidein. In a single week, I was able to get 33 more subscribers with only close to 1420 views, just with a new change. Well, I also included two more things that resulted in making people optin into the list.

Let me show you the changes and additions I did as well.

Customization In Optin Forms That Worked

I included an ethical bribe (lead magnet). 

I survey more than 700 people in June, and 497 people said they struggle to make money from their blog. Since I make money through affiliate marketing, I wrote an e-book named “the affiliate marketing strategies” and thought to give it for free to those who will join my mailing list.

I used Thrive Leads here.

That simple addition to my slide-ins gave my visitors that one solid reason they needed before joining my list.

When you show an optin form to your users, you have to give them a  reason to signup for your product, email list, or whatever you are trying to make them optin to.

You simply can’t offer your users anything but updates in return for their email. Simply placing an optin form below your post that says “sign up to receive the updates” won’t work.

Instead, what you need to do is give them what they want, and for doing that, you need to understand your audience and their interest and needs.

You can either simply as them or head over some analytics tool, the best being Google analytics.

Head over to the Google Analytics dashboard and click on the audience tab. This section will show you the demographics of the location and language of your audience. Furthermore, you can check on behavior flow to understand where your users are going and what they need.

The “No Distraction Space” & Color Selection for CTR

There is no fancy coloring, no image, and no-nonsense anywhere if you would see my exit-intent popup. It delivers my messages and brings my point quickly.

Another important thing is that there is no distraction at all. The background is completely blank and white-colored, which makes it impossible to look elsewhere. By doing this, I can make sure you are looking at what I wrote.

There’s also what we call social proof. I currently have more than 320 subscribers in my Affiliate marketing buildup course and 120+ subscribers in Blogging 101 with AB list. When I have it, I show it. This will help me build trust with my readers, and I highly recommend you do this as well.

Secondly, I chose very specific colors to maximize the conversion and decrease the bounces. According to my analytics data, I get more than 73% of the male audience and 27% of the female audience. This demographic helped me choose a better color that can suit human eyes for instant click-through.

I choose blue and green.

The color blue is liked by men and women of all ages. Have a look at this graph below:

So by including the color blue, I can make my optin forms more soothing to others. On the other hand, Green indicates a sense of positiveness and attracts our eyes before any other color in contrast. So by making my buttons green, I can maximize the attention to my CTA (call to action) as well.

I would recommend you change the color of your buttons to either green or blue. The rest of the text can be white or light orange to balance the contrast.

A Hidden Treasure In HelloBar

If you are using Hellobar or if you ever used it before, I’ve something to share with you that can help you increase your optin rates and lead conversions sky high.

One of the most underused and neglected types of HelloBar is page takeover. It shows a window that totally covers your content, and users are shown what you want them to. A simple email field here with an impressive content upgrade or a lead magnet can help you increase your conversion rates by up to 30% in a single day.

This is the same thing you see here when you try to leave. My exit-intent up isn’t just an ordinary popup; it takes over the page completely.

Still, it’s completely safe to use as users can click on the close button and are not forced to see the Hellobar. This is much similar to the welcome matt optin format we saw in the SUMOme tool.

So, a page takeover works better than any other kind of Hellobar format.

Selection of Fileds to Show on your Optin Forms

Showing too many fields will let your users go away at first sight.

Depending on your niche and needs, you need to use as few fields as possible, which in turn has two main benefits:

  1. User’s privacy remains safe.
  2. Things get done fast.

The more time users would spend to read your offers and about, the more time they spend thinking about whether to opt-in or not. You don’t need to necessarily have their names in the first place (although it is nice to be more personalized).

Most importantly, you won’t reach them with their names, so it’s better to remove the name field from your optin form, or you can simply make it no longer required. Leave it to your visitors whether they want to disclose their names or not.

Your messages should be to the point and short. Making it longer just for the sake of adding more word count and bragging about things that don’t matter will result in lower conversions. Instead, come to the point, showcase your credibility with an image and include a call-to-action.

So, in a nutshell, here’s the checklist of what I did and what can you do to increase your conversion rate for any goal:

  • You should run an A/B test with two different call-to-action
  • You should set up goals to track your progress.
  • Hellobar users should definitely try page takeover format.
  • Green & Blue made my CTR higher than red and yellow.
  • Slide-ins are less annoying, so you should use them instead of popups.
  • Inline forms and embedded sidebar forms perform worst.
  • Using content upgrades and lead magnets can help in more signups.

And using a dedicated email marketing service is necessary. You need to set up at least one autoresponder that will send your incentive to the subscribers.

You can start with MailChimp for free because setting up an autoresponder is pretty easy with it. Or you can try GetResponse if you need more power and workflow features.


Overall, the best way to get more subscribers on your list is by doing three things:

  1. Selection of the right tools – I would recommend Thrive Leads.
  2. Selection of conversion-focused optin form formats and colors – I would recommend content upgrades.
  3. Giving away a solid, in-demand incentive as a lead magnet – I would recommend a checklist.
