Pep Guardiola hails ‘perfect’ Manchester City win over Newcastle in message for doubters

Days after Champions League heartbreak in Madrid, the visit of a Newcastle side in-form looked a potentially difficult tie for City, particularly with John Stones and Kyle Walker out injured.

While Eddie Howe’s side did threaten in the opening stages, it proved a routine win for City, who moved three points clear of title rivals Liverpool following their draw at home with Tottenham on Saturday evening.

Raheem Sterling scored twice and was joined on the scoresheet by Aymeric Laporte, Rodri and Phil Foden in a dominant win on what felt like a pivotal weekend in the Premier League title race.

City head to Wolves on Wednesday before West Ham on Sunday, finishing the season at home to Aston Villa.

The City boss also insisted he never doubted his players’ response following their agonising midweek defeat to Real Madrid defeat.

He told Sky Sports: “It was a perfect afternoon for me.

“What this team have done, did you have any doubt? I didn’t doubt them.

“We have had five years doing this every three days, sometimes you can go out from a competition and some people doubt you because they still don’t know what you will do.

“This is one of the best groups I ever trained and I mean in my life.”
