Townsmen VR has announced a new PSVR2 port and release date for February!

Townsmen VR, last year’s successful medieval city builder set in a highly interactive VR world, has just announced that it will release a PSVR2 port alongside the console’s launch on February 22nd, 2023. Pre-orders are available today on the PlayStation Store. Currently, Townsmen VR is also available on Steam.

Developer HandyGames thanked THQ Nordic for their involvement in publishing a physical edition of Townsmen VR, too. Here’s the new announcement trailer from HandyGames, featuring a gameplay overview:

Townsmen VR is one of the more comprehensive examples of the VR genre, and fans have consistently praised how immersive it is. The VR genre has often suffered from dodgy physics, lesser graphics, and other setbacks resulting from the technological limitations.

However, Townsmen VR is densely populated with characters, resources, and mechanics that make it feel like similar titles. The city builder genre was a smart move, given the inherent freedom. But it was also an ambitious risk, which ultimately paid off.

The environments, theme, and NPCs allow players to make their own fun. Many VR games rely on a single gimmick, even from successful studios like Supermassive Games, whose rail shooter The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR was recently delayed. However, Townsmen VR boasts a wide range of mechanics, including battling soldiers, countless NPC interactions, and traditional city building.

The art design is playful but detailed, fitting the casual tone and medieval theme without losing any personality. Overall, Townsmen VR is colorful and unusually interactive, and remains one of the better VR titles. This makes it an ideal addition to PSVR2’s launch.

Sadly, it’s unclear if the physical edition will include any extra collectibles or content. Physical editions tend to add exclusive components like posters or other in-game nods, even for indies like Dungeon Munchies’ physical edition. Hopefully there’ll be more than just a case, given how expensive the new PSVR2 will be.
